Terrible news for the Halifax media market:
CANWEST MEDIAWORKS INC. is shedding 200 jobs at its Global and E! television stations across the country as it restructures operations and creates new broadcast facilities in four cities.
The money-losing Global Maritimes is expected to suffer especially significant losses from its staff of about 85, Barry Saunders, the station’s general manager, said in an interview Thursday.
"The changes are impacting on us greater than the rest of our stations," Mr. Saunders said.
"The primary reason for that is the financial viability."
He refused to comment on how many people will lose their jobs, although the union representing the workers said it was told 30 jobs in Halifax will go and 11 in New Brunswick.
The job lost is a tragedy in itself, of course. But additionally, we need as many media voices working on as many news stories as possible.
Admittedly, I don't watch the local Global TV news, but the very fact of its downsizing gives that much less incentive to its competitors. We all lose.
